KS 2: Kanabo Southern African Experiences
Namibia:
A place where undulating deserts fold down to meet a tempestuous coastline, Namibia offers a diverse range of highlights.
Scenic beauty including the Skeleton Coast, untouched and untamed, home to the rare Brown Hyena and Desert Elephants, seal colonies, the Kunene River the source of one of Africa's greatest waterfalls, the Ruacana, the splendour of abundant bird and wildlife, unusual geological formations including Fish River Canyon, Brandberg, Spitzkoppe and the unique dune mountains at Sossusvlei, pristine wilderness including Etosha National Park, the Namib Desert, the diverse and friendly nation and adventure opportunities from sand boarding, canoeing, white water rafting to hot air ballooning.
Namibia boasts remarkable natural attractions such as the Namib Desert, the Fish River Canyon, Etosha National Park and the Kalahari desert. Its people speak nine different languages, including some of the Khoisan languages which include the 'clicks' that present an enigma to most native English-speakers. Namibia produces some of the world's highest quality diamonds.
Botswana:
With the exception of the eastern part, three quarters of Botswana is technically a desert. This makes the Okavango Delta remarkable. It is a wonderful wetland within a desert, getting its waters from rain falling in central Africa, 1000 km away.
The Okavango Delta is one of the largest inland deltas in the world. It provides sustenance to a rich profusion of wildlife, and it is still in its natural state - unspoilt and unpolluted.
Over 17% of Botswana's land area has been set-aside as national parks and game reserves. From the lush green of the Okavango Delta in the north to the red desert dunes in the south, great areas of wilderness have been carefully preserved to offer visitors an opportunity to experience nature at its very best.
From the ancient baobabs of the Makgadikgadi & Nxai Pans, the vast open land of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, the sand dunes of the Kgalagadi, to the savannah grasslands of Chobe National Park and the mophane woodland of the Mashatu, there is a wide variety of wildlife in Botswana.
However it is in the Okavango Delta and Moremi Game Reserve that visitors will find unforgettable beauty. The lush indigenous forests of the delta and its islands, and along the floodplains spawned by this great marriage of water and sand, more than 400 species of birds flourish.
On the mainland and among the islands in the delta, lions, elephants, hyenas, wild dog, buffalo, hippo and crocodiles congregate with a teeming variety of antelope and other smaller animals - warthog, mongoose, spotted genets, monkeys, bushbabies and tree squirrels.
Zambia:
Zambia offers some of the finest scenery and game viewing experiences on the African continent. The country has opened up to selective tourism and is the "new" destination of Southern Africa. It boasts impressive populations of game and birds in the country's 19 national parks and 31 game management areas. This country offers unrivalled wilderness qualities and it is known as "the real Africa". The name "Zambia" derives from the Zambezi River. The country is located on the central African plateau which is above 1100m in elevation. The area is 752 615km2 with a population of 6 million. Lusaka the capital has a population of 1 million.
A "must" on any travellers itinerary when visiting Zambia, is the Lower Zambezi National Park, the Victoria Falls from the Zambian side, Livingstone, situated 8km from Victoria Falls, Lower Zambezi National Park, South Luangwa National Park, Kafue National Park and the exotic and beautiful Lechwe Plains.
